Computer Networking

Basic Network

A basic home network consists of a router, a modem, and cables. A basic network has the capability to connect multiple computers together. An internet connection is usually shared on the network via a DSL or Cable modem. The router, which is the "base" of the home network, is connected to your ISP (Internet Service Provider) so that you don't have to dial out every time you want access to the internet. Additionally, you can share files, folders, and printers between any computers on the network.

With a wireless router, you can have computers connected to the network from anywhere in the vicinity - even outside! Now you can print documents from across the room, access your e-mail in bed, shop by the pool, or be wherever you want to be with instant internet and network access.

Domain Systems

Domain controllers are more suitable for situations when large numbers of users need to access a network. A Domain consists of a domain controller or server, a router - wired, wireless, or both - and regular computers.

With a Domain, you can connect all of the computers in your small business or home office securely, and authenticate them every time they log on. This helps to prevent against unauthorized access to your network.

The Domain Server can make groups into which users are placed, and each group can have different permissions and policies that define what the users in the selected group are able to do. This is useful because you can restrict access to the domain, computers, printers, and files from potentially harmful or inexperienced users. For example, at a school with a domain, the "teachers" group has more access to programs and Windows components than the "students" group has. This prevents the children from accidentally harming the system, installing programs, or accessing unauthorized files and folders.
